Mauritian Dahl Soup

hot chili peppers

oil and/or butter

1 onion, chopped

2-3 cloves garlic

1 T ginger

1 T garam massala

2 tsp. turmeric

1 C dhal (lentils)

4 C water

½ to 1 can coconut milk, full cream or light, depending on desired richness

cilantro

lime juice


Heat oil with chilies - then remove chilies

Saute onion in butter/oil until translucent (+ or - butter if you want the soup richer)

Add garlic, ginger, garam massala and turmeric

Add dhal and water


Lower heat, cover and cook about 30 min or until done

Add coconut milk

Bring to a boil

Serve with cilantro and/or lime juice.
