Puerto Rican Beans

1 can kidney beans or black beans

2-3 T tomato sauce, salsa, chopped tomato (whatever you have)

2-3 T finely chopped onion

1 clove garlic, minced

pinch of sugar

1 pkg Sazon Goya seasoning (or combination of dried spices such as cumin, coriander, turmeric, basil, salt, pepper)

1 T olive oil


Heat the oil. Add 'sofrito' (onion, garlic, tomato sauce, sazon, sugar), and stir briefly. Add beans with liquid. Simmer 10-15 minutes. For dryer beans, drain off some of the liquid before adding can of beans.
